MBU Recruiting Information
Who are we?
Mary Baldwin University is a women-centered university emphasizing global leadership and citizenship, where tomorrow’s changemakers are empowered with the confidence to lead, the compassion to serve, and the courage to change the world.
A radical belief in student potential and in the transformative power of the liberal arts and sciences has guided Mary Baldwin University since its founding as Augusta Female Seminary in 1842. Our history began with founder Rufus Bailey and what was then a revolutionary idea: that women, like men, should be well educated. A generation later, namesake Mary Julia Baldwin took the reins during the Civil War; afterward her cutting-edge innovations made the institution thrive. This history continues today with students who dare to make a difference, engage in service to their communities, and boldly initiate change in our neighborhood and around the world.
MBU Athletics have a rich history, tracing back to the early 1900s, with intramural contests in several sports, including basketball, tennis, and softball. In 1949, the Annual Sports Day of the Virgnia Athletic Federation of Colleges for Women was held in Staunton, allowing for intercollegiate competition. By 1967, there were intercollegiate competitions in dance, golf, swimming, fencing, basketball, and tennis.
Today, we are a NCAA Division III institution, and a member of the USA South Athletic Conference. We offer six sports at the intercollegiate level: soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball, softball, and tennis.

We say we are Boldly Baldwin because our students and alumnae use everything Mary Baldwin University has to offer to become their best. Their best collaborators. Their best leaders. Their best decision-makers. Their best at adapting to career changes. And, ultimately, their best selves.
Our family is filled with individuals who build on what they love to create lives of passion and purpose, in athletics and beyond. Our alumnae commission into the military to serve their country. Others go on to graduate school. Others still are leaders in industry, building on their skills they learned as athletes to lead in business.
What does it mean to be Division III?
Follow your passions and discover your potential. The college experience is a time of learning and growth – a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletics environment, where student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue the full spectrum of opportunities available during their time in college. In this way, Division III provides an integrated environment for student-athletes to take responsibility for their own paths, follow their passions and their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.
