Softball Gets First Win Over Averett

DANVILLE, VA - The Mary Baldwin University softball team defeated Averett University this afternoon in the first game of a USA South double header 8-7 in eight innings. 

Averett jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 2 innings.

Mary Baldwin got on the board in the 4th inning scoring six runs to take the lead. 

Averett answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs to trail 4-6 then added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game.  Both teams were held scoreless in the 7th inning.

Mary Baldwin scored two runs in the top of the 8th inning then held the home team to just one run to take the win.

Senior Morgan Tully tallied 1 run and 3 hits while fellow senior Kristen Anderson added 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Sam Bird added 2 hits and 1 RBI.

The win was a true team effort as Jordan Miller, Chrissy Cromer, Ali Bascunan, and Pattie Pleasants all added an RBI each. 

Heather Mayes pitched the first 6 innings for Mary Baldwin.  Courtney Gordon took the mound for the final 2 innings and improved her record to 5-7. 

The Cougars came back in the second game to win 10-4. 

Sam Bird added 1 hit and 2 RBI's to lead the Fighting Squirrels in the second game.

Mary Baldwin University, 7-21 (5-15 USAS), have tallied the most conference wins this year since joining the USA South.  The Fighting Squirrels can add to their total tomorrow when they take on Meredith College in Raleigh, NC.
