STAUNTON, VA - The Mary Baldwin University softball team opened USA South Conference play this afternoon against N.C. Wesleyan College. The Fighting Squirrels fell to the Battling Bishops 10-0 in the first game and 9-2 in the final game of the afternoon.
In the first game, the visitors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning then took a commanding lead in the top of the 3rd inning tallying 7 runs. Shelby Godwin doubled and Alicia Burns homered to right center for the Bishops.
N.C. Wesleyan College added one run in the 4th and another in the 5th to take the win in five innings.
In the second game, the Bishops jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the 3rd inning.
Mary Baldwin answered in the bottom of the 4th inning. Senior Morgan Tully hit her first home run of the year to left field driving home Sam Bird.
Down 2-5, Mary Baldwin was able to put themselves in scoring position again but failed to cross the plate.
N.C. Wesleyan added 1 run in the 6th and 3 runs in the 7th to take the 9-2 win. The Bishops finished the game with 14 hits while Mary Baldwin tallied 5.
Afterwards, Head Coach Christy Shelton said, "We haven't put it all together yet. There were positives in both games that we can take and build upon. We need to eliminate our errors, have better disciplned at bats and the pitchers need to keep improving. Once we do, it will be fun to watch it all come together."
Mary Baldwin, 0-4 (0-2 USAS), host Wilson College on Friday before going on the road to continue conference play next weekend.
