Four Former MBC Basketball Players Named to USA South 50th Anniversary Team

STAUNTON, VA - Four of Mary Baldwin College’s women’s basketball players have been named to the USA South 50th Anniversary Women’s Basketball Team.  All-time leading scorer Jessica Carter, all-time leading rebounder Kara Hawkins, Sabrina Desper, and Denise Johnson all received the honor.

All-time leading scorer Jessica Carter finished her career at Mary Baldwin scoring 1,943 points (18.33ppg) shooting over 40% from the floor and 34.7% from 3 point range.  Carter was named to the USA South All-Conference first team during her senior season which was Mary Baldwin’s initial season in the USA South.

All-time leading rebounder Kara Hawkins also earned a spot on the team after finishing her career at Mary Baldwin College grabbing 1041 rebounds.  Hawkins averaged 10.84 boards per game and 10.24 points per game.  The six-foot forward shot just shy of 40% from the floor.  Hawkins earned second team USA South All-Conference honors during the 2009-10 season.

Denise Johnson, who only played for the Fighting Squirrels for two seasons, earned a spot on the team after averaging 11.15 points per game.  Johnson also averaged 3.28 steals per game and 3.25 assists per game.  The Staunton native was named to the USA South All-Conference third team in 2011.

The youngest member of the Fighting Squirrels to make the team is Sabrina Desper.  Desper finished her career as Mary Baldwin’s fifth leading rebounder (595) while scoring 1049 total points.  This puts the August County native eighth on the school’s list of all-time leading scorers. Desper was named to the USA South All-Conference second team in 2012.
