This Wednesday the Fighting Squirrels basketball team, 2-14 (0-5 USA South), will travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina, to take on the Methodist University Monarchs 3-13 (1-4 USA South) in an exciting conference matchup.
Last weekend, MBU played conference opponents Averett University and Meredith College, losing both contests; however, there were still positive takeaways.
“We scored the ball much better in the second half,” said Coach Stephens after the 90-50 loss to Averett. “We also did some really good things defensively; they came into this game with the third leading scorer in the conference and she ended up with only two points.” After being outscored 51-20 in the first half, MBU was able to improve, and in the fourth quarter the teams tied with 16 points each. Khai Davidson and Nicole Blackburn each scored 14 points in the loss, and Blackburn also had 13 rebounds on the afternoon.
On Sunday the Squirrels lost a close game to Meredith College 62-49. Kearsten Brazeal led Mary Baldwin with 13 points. MBU showed a big improvement from last year’s 36-point loss against the Angels.
After Wednesday’s trip to Fayetteville, Mary Baldwin will return to North Carolina this weekend, playing at Greensboro College on Saturday, January 28th, and at William Peace (Raleigh) on Sunday, January 29th. Both games start at 2:00 p.m. Go Fighting Squirrels!
