Tennis Opens Season at Shenandoah

Winchester, VA - The Mary Baldwin University women's tennis team began the season Saturday evening at Shenandoah University.  The Hornets defeated the Fighting Squirrels 9-0.

Mary Baldwin's top two spots are filled by the team's only returning players.  Alayah Austin returned for her third season playing the #1 spot losing to Morgan Fuqua 0-6, 0-6.  Sakurako Ishii also returned after not playing last season.  She fell to Denise Vollmer 1-6, 4-6 at the second singles spot.

Newcomers Esperanza Cadena (#3) and Azaria Marlowe (#4) fell to Alyssa White and Melodie Madison respectively.  Because the match had been decided, the final two singles matches played 8 game pro sets.  Fathia Mohammed (#5) and Jamie Osorio (#6) rounded out the singles play.

Austin and Ishii fell at the #1 doubles spot 4-8 while Cadena and Marlowe lost at the second spot 2-8.  Jacqueline Cottingham and Fathia Mohammed teamed up at the #3 doubles slot.

Mary Baldwin University, 0-1, continue play on March 1 at Southern VA.
