Saturday, March 25, 2017—The Mary Baldwin University Fighting Squirrels outdoor track team competed in their second meet of the season at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational, hosted by the Lynchburg College Hornets. With 16 schools in attendance, it was a large, competitive meet.
The Squirrels took advantage of the opportunity, improving on many performances from last week. Brittany Tenn now holds the record for the shot put (10.1m), placing 16th out of 32 throwers. And Rakeema Willis broke the school record in the 100m (14.74).
Coach Ely felt the day went well. “I was happy to see some improvements at this meet. It’s still early in the season. The team is on an upward learning curve, and we expect to see further PRs at each competition.”
With only 14 athletes competing this week, the Squirrels were unable to fill as many events. “We had 6 athletes absent because of other commitments, so we’re looking to be back at full strength next week.”
The team competes next Saturday at the Doc Jopson Invite, hosted by Bridgewater College. Field events begin at 9:00 a.m., and running events begin at 10:00 a.m.
